Former Cana apartment at 914 Main Street
Worcester Hellos and Goodbyes, June 15, 2006
After seven years of living at Apartment 5 of 914 Main Street, the AMA Community in Worcester (also known as the “Cana Community”) moved two blocks away to its new home at 41 Maywood Street. The new site is just a five minute walk away from St. Peter’s Church and directly across the street from Clark University. We’re happy to stay in the Main South neighborhood and be within such easy reach of the mission sites where our AMAs serve: St. Peter’s Church, Family Health Center, Refugee Apostolate, etc. We’re also happy that the new house has a little yard that offers lots of possibilities for cookouts and barbecues…something our previous apartments didn’t have!
It was no easy task to move out of our fourth floor apartment at 914 Main Street and into the third floor of 41 Maywood Street, but we had the muscle power and good humor of our friends Dave, Brian, Andy and Frank to make the move less arduous on our knees and backs!
We have so many good memories of our seven years at 914 Main Street and give thanks to God for all the AMAs who lived there and shared their lives with us and the people of Main South. Every day was an experience of the miracle of Cana….our water being changed into wine. We look forward to welcoming the new AMAs who will come and pitch their tent among the people of Main South in the new apartment.
As we said goodbye to the old apartment, we also said goodbye (again!) to a former Cana community member, Sindy Collazo, who is returning to her hometown of Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Sindy came to the Cana Community from Puerto Rico in 1998 to work full-time in Hispanic ministry at St. Peter’s Church. She prepared children for First Communion, sang in the choir, helped form and lead a young adults group, assisted in the English as a Second Language program, mentored youth in the after-school program, and worked in the parish rectory. Sindy renewed her AMA commitment for a second year and worked at the Catholic Free Press (the Worcester diocesan newspaper) while continuing to volunteer at St. Peter’s.
We first said goodbye to Sindy in 2000 when she left us to pursue a Master’s degree in Theological Studies at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, MA. We said goodbye a second time when she graduated from Weston and went to work with EPNE (Estudios Pastorales para la Nueva Evangelizacion), a ministry sponsored by the New York Province of the Society of Jesus. Now we say goodbye a third time and look forward to many more “hello’s” in the years to come! May God bless you, Sindy, and guide you along your way!
