The General Chapter Begins, July 6, 2006

The General Chapter of the Religious of the Assumption begins with an Opening Mass at 6:00 p.m., July 6, 2006 at the Chapel of the Mother House in Paris, France. Among the 75 delegates to the General Chapter are our own Sisters Clare Teresa and Diana, representing the North American Province.  Sr. Nuala is also at the Chapter as a member of the secretariat.

Please accompany us in prayer as we begin this very important time in the life of our congregation.

We also give thanks to Sr. Cristina Maria Gonzalez, our Superior General, for twelve years of generous and dedicated leadership. We thank our General Council as well: Sr. Ana Catalina (West Africa), Sr. Eugenia Guadalupe (Mexico), Sr. Maureen (England) and Sr. Leela (India) for their service and affection these last six years.

What is a General Chapter?

The General Chapter is a time in the life of our congregation when we try to listen attentively to the voice of the Lord and search for His will. The whole congregation is represented through its delegates in order to make decisions, establish direction and set priorities for the next six years. Through the Chapter we hope to grow in unity and fidelity as we live out our charism in today’s world. It is also the General Chapter that elects a new Superior General and her Council.

The General Chapter is held every six years and is convoked by the Superior General.

“The mission of this Chapter of 2006 will be to discern how the energies of the Spirit – passion and compassion – are going to incarnate our response to what the Spirit wants of us as a congregation.

Let this Chapter take as its starting point our experiences and give us a new way of looking at the world, a positive gaze which opens us to hope.

Let this Chapter open our eyes, our ears, our hearts, our minds….to see, to listen, to feel, to love, to understand what is going on in us and around us, and so let ourselves be touched by the forces of life and death, by the Paschal dynamic which marks our times, and our world.

From this interior attitude our passion will be born. We will give hospitality to God’s passion for humanity, for each person, and we will hear the Spirit telling us what He wants for us in this moment of our history.” -- Excerpts from the Report of Sr. Cristina Maria Gonzalez, Superior General, June 2005

Who attends the General Chapter?

The General Chapter is composed of the Superior General, the General Councillors, the General Treasurer, the Secretary General, the Provincial Superiors, and delegates from each Province.
