Message of Sr. Diana On The Anniversary Of the Foundation of the Religious of the Assumption, April 30, 2007

Mother Marie Eugenie founded the Religious of the Assumption on April 30th, 1839 in Paris, France.  (Please click here for a brief description of those early days.)

Sr. Diana, our Superior General, writes to the Assumption Family on this special day.

TO THE SISTERS AND FRIENDS OF THE ASSUMPTION

Dear Sisters and Friends,

Today, the day of our foundation!

A day of celebration of our origin, of our beginnings.

A day to celebrate our communities, our present apostolates, and the orientations of the Chapter which, too, are foundational!

A day to celebrate all our sisters and all those people who have so loved Marie Eugenie and the congregation she founded!

A day to celebrate all the contributions and the participation of so many who have helped to develop, strengthen and spread the light of the Assumption!

A day of special celebration, this year, when the Church officially recognises Marie Eugenie‘s path to holiness, and the way she understood the “recapitulation of all things in Christ”, and of living the gospel in community with her sisters, and of contributing to God’s Reign.

As we recall the beginnings of the Congregation let us be questioned by Marie Eugenie: “How are you, today, dear daughters, entering into a new beginning? In my spirit? Yes! Rooted in the tradition? Yes! – but also, by being creative, daring!” May these “yesses” resonate in us.

To think of the foundation of the Congregation is to think of its beginnings, but also to see it as a building, of which the ideas and the life of Marie Eugenie are the solid foundation. The first foundation that others follow. This morning in his homily Père Stéphan recalled “the martyrs who sustained the Christian basis of our society!” A particularly significant word on this day when we remember the “paschal moment” of our Rwandan sisters on 26th April, 1994. It is through its work of education across the continents that the Assumption continues to sustain and strengthen the spiritual basis of societies. A foundation in the past, in the present …..and in the future.

The dynamism which propelled Marie Eugenie to begin in 1839 sends us out today. It is up to us to seize this moment of grace. And above all, “to give thanks to God for all his works,” to our God “magnificent in holiness”( Ps 145).

With all my affection and my prayer for each one of you,

Sr. Diana, r.a.
Superior General
