Religious of the Assumption
Motherhouse
Transformative Education, February 13, 2008
Today the CGP turned its attention to the document on Transformative Education from the General Chapter of 2006. The General Council, in its project of government, chose to focus on this important characteristic of the Assumption:
1. Assist the Provinces in putting into practice the General Chapter text on Transformative Education.
2. Accompany and support the Provinces in their initiatives and educational experiences.
3. Make known the different educational experiences in the Provinces.
It was in this context that a questionnaire/survey was sent to all the communities of the congregation. Through it the General Council hoped to determine the state of the educational mission of the Religious of the Assumption: Where are we focusing our efforts? With whom? How?
The questionnaire was sent out in June of 2007. The General Council began to study the responses in November 2007. This morning a first summary and analysis of the results was presented to the CGP. One hundred eighty five questionnaires were submitted, even if we are only 179 communities in the congregation. Congratulations to the Sisters and their lay friends for such a job well done!
This material will need further analysis and interpretation. Reading the different questionnaires gives the impression of traveling from country to country, from culture to culture, perceiving the creativity of initiatives, the efficacy of the work of the Sisters and the immense diversity of educational activity. All this leads us to give thanks for the legacy of St. Marie Eugenie – an educational charism that knows how to respond to the needs of society in today’s world.
The questionnaire also considered the impact of the Reference Text of 1998. It’s clear that this text has marked and strengthened the work of education in some Provinces. For others, it’s a call to return to this text and discover its richness. Some Provinces, like Central America and the Philippines, have created popular versions of the text – comic books, etc.
This questionnaire opens the door to much more reflection and work on our mission of education. The CGP will try to map out a course to continue this process. With what hope we continue on!
