Typhoon Fengshen Hits The Philippines, June 24, 2008
Typhoon Fengshen ripped through the Philippines June 21st causing extensive damage and loss of life. The capsizing of the ferry M.V. Princess of the Stars alone caused more than 700 deaths.
Most heavily devastated were the provinces of Iloilo, Antique, Aklan and Capiz in the island of Panay where the Assumption Sisters have two communities. Sr. Marjo Matias, Philippine Provincial, wrote to say that floodwaters were waist deep in the town of Sibalom, Antique. Our Sisters have all moved up to the second floor of the convent while the second floor of our school, Sta. Rita Academy, has been converted into an evacuation center for the town hospital.
The Sisters are deeply engaged in providing immediate shelter, food and other emergency assistance to the victims of the typhoon. For more information on the extent of the damage wrought by Fengshen (named "Frank" in the Philippines), go to the website of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
If you would like to send a donation to help the Sisters help the typhoon victims, you may send it to:
Religious of the Assumption

Let us keep the people of the Philippines and all victims of natural disasters in our prayer.
