Worcester, MA is the site of our Provincial House.
We collaborate in the work of education with our Assumptionist brothers at Assumption College through teaching, providing service opportunities in the spring and summer, library work and campus ministry. Sisters also minister to the immigrant community through work at the parish of St. Peter’s in the Main South section of the city. At St. Peter’s, the English as a Second Language classes and an after-school mentoring program were founded and are carried out by Sisters and many volunteers from Assumption College and Clark University as well as adults from the parish and the area.
In September 2007, the province bought the former rectory of St. Andrew’s parish from the Diocese and turned it into the Assumption Center.
The headquarters of our lay volunteer program, the Associate Missionaries of the Assumption (AMA), is housed in the Assumption Center. A project of the Religious of the Assumption since the 1950s, AMA has been particularly active in the U.S. since the 1980s. Since its move to Worcester in 2001, AMA-USA has sent around 80 young people to mission sites both overseas and in this country. In the United States, AMAs work with our sisters in Worcester and in Chaparral.
In addition to the AMA office, the Center provides housing for the AMAs themselves, who live together in community there, working with the Sisters and other local volunteers. (They are also linked to the religious community by sharing regular meals, prayer and time together.) The AMAs offer service at St. Peter’s, Assumption Center and other neighborhood organizations that serve the disadvantaged.
Assumption Center also welcomes groups from around the city that need space for meetings or training sessions: Stand Up For Kids, Assumption College Campus Ministry, etc. It is the sponsor of the GIFT (Growing In Faith Together) lecture series which offers several talks every year.
It also is the site of the Kate O'Neill Library -- a lending library of spiritual books – founded in response to a perceived need in the neighborhood for reading material that nurtures the soul.
Once a week the Knitting Circle meets there and many times a week you will find Sisters, neighbors and friends at work in our community garden, "Semillas de Vida" or "Seeds of Life."
