Could you hear the "Si!" that rang out in Chaparral, New Mexico last August 15th? The community of Assumption Sisters in this "colonia" on the border with Mexico celebrated Mother Marie Eugenie's canonization and the Feast of the Assumption with gusto!
The celebration began with Mass at St. Thomas More parish that included testimonies from some of the eleven Chaparral pilgrims who went to Rome. A Powerpoint presentation highlighting some of the peak moments of the canonization and places the group had visited was shown. All of these were interspersed with quotations from St. Marie Eugenie and the national anthem of the canonization, "La Gloria de Dios," playing in the background. Every time Sr. Diana Wauters, former Superior of the Chaparral community and now Superior General of the congregation, would come out on the screen the people would break out in applause.
Refreshments were served after the Mass at the parish hall. Decorating the hall were pictures and exhibits of items brought back from the trip to Rome. The DVD of Youth Night, the musical homage to Marie Eugenie, was playing in a corner for those who wanted to see excerpts of it. Of course there were enough Assumption tarts to feed an armyand they were gone before you knew it!
As one Sister said of the celebration, "He sentido profundamente que Marie Eugenia estaba feliz de estar aqui con nosotras en Chaparral." Si, hermanas, si. We know she is.
Two more celebrations of Mother Marie Eugenie's canonization are coming soon: October 27, 5:15 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia, PA and November 11, 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Assumption College, Worcester, MA. We hope you will come and celebrate with us. For more information about these events please email email@example.com
