Saint Marie Eugenie
Foundress
Religious of the Assumption
“I asked God for the gift of his Holy Spirit so as to have a large heart that would be active for the good of others.” (1845 – Notes)
“When I pray, I feel the desire to let allow myself to be seized by the Spirit of God, to receive on this feast of Pentecost the gift of the Spirit’s breaking the bonds that bind me too tightly to myself.” (May 1861)
A Thought and a Prayer for You
Often, Marie Eugenie returns to her need for the strength and light of God because she is very aware of her weakness in the face of the work she has to accomplish. She rarely speaks of the Holy Spirit – in her times, the Spirit was not spoken of much in general – but one can sense Marie Eugenie has a great trust in Him and is certain of the Spirit’s presence acting in her.
Let’s count on the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Fearful as they were, the apostles became intrepid witnesses of Jesus Christ. It’s up to us to continue this immense chain of witnesses thanks to the faith that has been handed down to us.
"Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!"
Saint Marie Eugenie's thoughts, life and spirit continue to inspire us today. They offer us a path to holiness that the Church recognizes as a way to God for women and men of all ages, cultures and times.
